What's the Samaritan Difference?
The Center is affiliated with the Samaritan Institute, a network of faith-based counseling centers. We believe that individual and family health has several dimensions: physical, social, psychological, emotional and spiritual.
Our Christian perspective is guided by Christ's emphasis on compassion, inclusion, and the worth of every person; and by his commandments, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself" (Luke 10:27).
The Samaritan staff come from various Christian faith traditions and is guided by this foundational Christian view. Our purpose is to embrace these central principles both in our private lives and in our professional service to others.
Integral to our methodology is our view of counseling through the wellness model lens. This model considers people to be in the process of growing and developing throughout the life span, and that each person can use resources around them to deal with difficulties and challenges they encounter. Based on this model the counseling relationship involves acceptance, affirmation and empowerment.
The Center is staffed with counselors who are trained in professionally recognized programs and use professionally recognized approaches to counseling. They have formal licensure or certification in the State of Alabama and are affiliated with their appropriate professional organizations. For example, Center counselors include those with specialized training in Pastoral Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Social Work, Professional Counseling, and Grief Counseling. Professional clinical affiliations include the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, American Counseling Association, American Academy of Grief Counseling, and the Christian Association for Psychological Studies.
The Center also works with organizations and community groups, believing that healthy organizations and communities foster healthy individuals and families. We consult frequently with businesses and churches and offer educational and support opportunities, as well as strategic planning facilitation. Pastors and their congregations may take advantage of such opportunities through our Pastor as Shepherd and Congregational Assistance programs.
